Deep Fried Cheese!

Yesterday afternoon my accounting group from work had a summer outing at Lucky Strike. This is a bowling alley in the Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago. While bowling we ordered a couple of orders of deep fried cheese. It was very good and luckily for me I had a light lunch!

It would have been easy to fall off the bus and eat and eat and eat. But I was able to hold my own against the evil wiles of deep fried dairy products.

And the bowling was fun!

Mister Ya Got a Blister!

I have been laying off of the heavy hiking/walking since I did seven miles at the Indiana Dunes State Park on Saturday.  I was hiking along the shoreline with one of my dogs and my right boot got wet.  Needless to say I have a blister just behind the ball of my foot.  This is probably the largest single blister I have ever had.  It measures well over a quarter in diameter!

I laid off of walking yesterday only doing one mile from the train to the office and another mile at lunch.  Today however, I did my mile in the morning to the office and did four miles with Pepper this evening.  I thought that I would not have a problem, but I thought wrong.  The entire last mile and a half it felt like my right foot was on fire.  The pain was from the ball off my foot and going back through my arch almost to my heel.

Needless to say I will probably take it a little bit easier the next couple of days. Also, I will probably start wearing my Brooks running shoes on pavement to see if they will not give me problems.  I have been wearing my RedWing hiking boots for the last couple of weeks.  So maybe the change will do me good.

Am I Hungry?

That is a good question.  In the past I would automatically take that empty feeling in my stomach and say yes I am hungry.  But now that I have been eating more sensibly with my portion size.  I have come to realize that I was not hungry, my stomach was just empty.  There is a big difference between the two.  Now I can sense that it is empty but I do not NEED to have that XXXX (you can fill in the blank with whatever your current craving is).  I just now realize that yes it is empty and I will eat when I am hungry.

That is not to say that I am starving myself.  Trust me that does not work for me.  When I wait so long that I am famished I get home off of the train and start eating with dinner and don't stop until I go to sleep.  And then I am wondering why I am overweight.

So I have come to realize that it is normal to have an empty stomach between meals.  I don't need to have the sensation of being full all of the time.  And if I do eat a snack now it is a piece of fruit (still can't get into carrots and humus) and I am good to go to the next meal.  This is compared to my previous snack at work which was a couple of pop tarts (time to sell your stock in Kellogg's, their sales are going down).

Progress - June 24, 2012

Progress as of June 24, 2012

Weight: 242.8 lbs

Total Weight Lost: 7.2 lbs

Measurements:

Neck:  17.5"

Decrease: 0.5"

Waist (Belly):  49.5"

Decrease: 0.5"

Well if I am going to keep a public blog about this I need to keep track of what is going on.  So far I have dropped 7 pounds and a half inch off of my neck and waist.  This is after two weeks of eating better and exercise.  Hopefully by doing this I will keep my self motivated and be able to see how I look over time.

For the pictures I will be taking a front and profile picture (pretty much a fat guys mug shot). Every week.  I will be wearing a wife beater and a pair of shorts.  In the profile pic above it is hard to see how far my belly sticks out due to the dark background so I will have to see about fixing that in the future.

29.77 Miles - Week of June 17 - 23

29.77 Miles...

WOW!

My plan is to get moving and this is a good start!  My current walking is back and forth from the train to work each day which is two miles, then I walk about a mile at lunch.  That will get me to three miles without trying to hard (since I do this normally).  When I get home in the evening I go for a walk with Pepper my (Catahoula) for anothe two and a half miles (this is usually at about 9:30 to 10:00 PM).

And before I know it I am doing 5 miles a day!!

Now lets keep it up fat boy!

Tools

Tools for Weigh Loss

I am currently using two different tools for my weight loss.  The first is to track my food intake and also my exercise (at a basic level i.e. minutes walked).  I have been using www.myfitnesspal.com to track this.  The first thing that I like is that I can use this easily from my iphone.  And the second is that when you search a food you use a database that is composed of all members entries.  Because of this it is pretty rare to find a food that is not in the system.  But if I do it is easy to add the food.

The second tool is www.mapmyrun.com this allows me to track in detail my workouts and with the iphone app I can use the gps on my phone to create routes.

So, at the end of the day this appeals to the accountant in me in that I get to track lots of data.

The Nondiet

So here I am again at this blog four and a half years latter and at 250 pounds.  I have decided that I am going to start losing weight again.

But, this time I am not going on a diet.  I am not depriving myself of anything or "cleansing" my system with whatever is the latest fad.  The first part of my nondiet is to NOT eat to excess.  You see my problem is that I have always treated eating as a competitive sport, and unfortunately I was a champion.  I would sit and eat until I could not eat any more, then I was full.  The second part of my nondiet is to start moving.  I have always walked a lot due to my commute to my office from the train each day.  This added up to a two mile round trip each day.  So to get more active I have started walking in the evenings about two and a half miles.  This now gets me up to around five miles a day.

Through the 25th of June I have logged 49 miles of walking since June 9th.

So far I am off to a good start.
